What to Wear Saltwater Fishing in Daytona

 ·  By Captain Brad

What you wear on a saltwater fishing charter can make the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable trip and a miserable, sunburned one. Here's what I recommend after 25+ years on the water in Daytona Beach.

Sun Protection Is Everything

The Florida sun reflects off the water and hits you from every angle. Even on cloudy days, UV exposure on the water is intense. Prioritize sun protection above everything else when choosing your outfit.

Best Clothing Choices

  • UPF 50+ long-sleeve fishing shirt — The single best investment for a day on the water. Brands like Columbia, Huk, and Pelagic make excellent options. Light-colored and moisture-wicking.
  • Lightweight fishing pants or shorts — Quick-dry material is ideal. Avoid denim — it's heavy, slow to dry, and uncomfortable when wet.
  • Wide-brim hat or baseball cap — Protects your face, ears, and neck. A buff or neck gaiter adds extra protection.
  • Polarized sunglasses — Essential for eye protection and spotting fish. Wrap-around styles offer the best coverage.
  • Closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles — Boat shoes, sneakers, or water shoes. No flip-flops or sandals.

What to Avoid

  • Dark-colored clothing — absorbs heat and makes the day much hotter
  • Cotton t-shirts — hold moisture and dry slowly
  • Flip-flops or sandals — unsafe on a moving boat
  • Loose, baggy clothing — can catch on equipment
  • Expensive or dry-clean-only clothing — you will get wet and smell like fish

Seasonal Adjustments

In winter (December–February), bring a light jacket or windbreaker — mornings on the water can be cool, especially at speed. In summer, prioritize breathability and sun protection over warmth. A light rain jacket is always a good idea year-round.

Now that you know what to wear — let's go fishing!
