Daytona Beach and the surrounding Volusia County coastline is one of the premier shark fishing destinations in the entire world. The warm Gulf Stream waters, abundant baitfish, and miles of accessible beach and nearshore structure make this area a magnet for multiple shark species year-round.
Top Shark Species to Target
When you book a shark fishing charter out of New Smyrna Beach or Daytona Beach, you can expect to encounter:
- Bull Sharks — The most common and aggressive species in our waters. Found in the surf, nearshore reefs, and river mouths.
- Blacktip Sharks — Fast, acrobatic fighters that are plentiful from spring through fall.
- Spinner Sharks — Known for their spectacular aerial spins when hooked.
- Hammerhead Sharks — Occasionally encountered offshore; a bucket-list catch for any angler.
- Lemon Sharks — A powerful, hard-fighting species common in our nearshore waters.
- Nurse Sharks — Bottom-dwelling sharks that put up a strong, stubborn fight.
Best Time of Year for Shark Fishing
Shark fishing in Daytona Beach is productive year-round, but the peak season runs from April through October. Water temperatures warm up in spring, pushing baitfish schools close to shore — and the sharks follow. Summer brings the highest concentration of Blacktips and Spinners in the surf zone. Fall is excellent for Bull Sharks as they stage near inlets and river mouths.
What Gear Does Captain Brad Use?
All tackle is provided on the charter. Captain Brad uses heavy-duty conventional and spinning setups with 80–130 lb braided line, wire leaders, and circle hooks to ensure a clean, safe release. Fresh cut bait — ladyfish, mullet, and stingray — is used to attract sharks to the boat.
What to Expect on the Charter
Shark charters run 3 hours and depart from New Smyrna Beach. Captain Brad handles all the rigging, baiting, and fish handling — your job is to enjoy the fight. All sharks are released alive unless you choose to keep a legal species. Photos are encouraged and Captain Brad will help you get the perfect shot safely.
Is Shark Fishing Safe?
Absolutely — when done with an experienced captain. Captain Brad has been guiding shark fishing trips for over 25 years and follows strict safety protocols for handling these powerful fish. You'll never be asked to handle a shark unsafely.
